What's New at the Metro Shelter

SPCA Satellite Adoption Center Re-opens at Petcetera!
The new Petcetera store reopened its doors in Dartmouth Crossing in September
and invited the SPCA Metro Shelter to once again use their cat adoption room to
highlight some of the wonderful cats they have up for adoption. All cats that
are up for adoption are spayed or neutered, have received their 1st vaccine,
flea treatment and dewormer and also receive a complimentary 48 hour vet check.
The Metro Shelter appreciates Petcetera's commitment to animal welfare, reducing
animal euthansia and promoting responsible pet ownership. None of the Petcetera
stores across Canada sell dogs or cats in their stores, instead they highlight
animals in their P.A.W.S (Petcetera Animal Welfare Society) Adoption Centres
rooms from local non-profit Animal Welfare Organizations like the SPCA Metro
Shelter!

Deloitte employees lend a hand at the Metro Shelter
On Saturday, Sept 26, 2009, Employee's from Deloitte volunteered a half day of
their time to help out at the Metro Shelter. Not only did they help walk dogs
and cuddle cats, they also offered their assistance with some shelter cleanup
projects (painting, hanging blinds and other handy work). Their help was greatly
appreciated at the shelter and we hope that they enjoyed their day working with
the animals!

Pugapalooza 2009 raises over $2500 for the Metro Shelter!
On Saturday, July 25, 2009 Pugapalooza was held at Fetch Inc, located at 80 Joseph Zatzman Drive in Burnside. This year’s theme was “Christmas in July” and all admission proceeds were donated to the Metro SPCA Shelter, totaling over $2500! There was a BBQ, games and prizes and a great time was had by all participants. The Metro Shelter would like to thank all of their supporters and “furry” friends from Pugapalooza for their support. Part of the donation money was used to purchase new easy walk harnesses for the dogs at the shelter, a gift that was greatly appreciated!

The Metro Shelter Dog Jog was held on June 21, 2009, in Point Pleasant Park, and raised over $14,000 to support the Metro Shelter! Despite the rain, it was a great time for all two-legged and four-legged participants. Check out the photos below.
Frito Lay Volunteers Making a Difference!
On Thursday, June 4, 2009, 21 Employees from Frito Lay volunteered a half day of their time to help the shelter make improvements to the exterior of the building and property. They spread two dump truck loads of new pea gravel for the backyard, painted all the exterior windows of the shelter, mowed and cleaned up the property and even planted a new garden bed by the front door! Not only did they give generously of their time, then even donated $840 to the shelter. We’d also like to thank Conrad Bros for donating the pea gravel and to Theresa and Lloyd MacDonald who donated a bobcat for the heavy lifting!

SPCA Volunteer is Martimer of the Week!
On Friday, May 6, 2009, Harold Porteous and his son Chris were recognized by both CTV and the SPCA Metro Shelter for their generosity in helping the Shelter complete much needed interior renovations to the building. They created a new cat Isolation room, two new cat adoption rooms and installed new tile flooring through the main area of the building to name just a few of their achievements! The Metro Staff would like to give a big, heartfelt thank you to both Harold and Chris for all their help!
